How to choose site search for your e-shop

Whichever service you choose, check these nine things on your own catalogue before you commit. Most of them take a few minutes with a free trial.

  1. Greek in practice. Type “antiliako”, “σαμπουαν” without accents and a brand phonetically. If the right products don’t appear, your shoppers will see “0 results”.
  2. Natural language. Try a question the way a shopper writes it: “face sunscreen under €20” or “something for sleep”. Price and need should both be understood.
  3. Speed. Results should appear while the shopper types, especially on mobile.
  4. What happens if the service is down. Ask whether the store falls back to its own search (fail-open) or the search bar simply stops working.
  5. Analytics and revenue. You need zero-result searches, clicks and, above all, the revenue that search brought in. Without these you can’t tell whether the service pays for itself.
  6. Connecting your platform. How many steps it takes, whether you need a developer, and whether new versions arrive automatically.
  7. Pricing model. Check what happens when you exceed searches or products: does the service stop, charge you automatically, or warn you first?
  8. Data and GDPR. Where the data is hosted, who can see it, and whether there is a data processing agreement (DPA).
  9. AI and how it is billed. If there is an assistant or semantic search, find out how it is charged and whether you can set a limit.
